She was a temptress.

She knew full well what she was doing, and how he would react to it. He kicked the door shut behind them, placing them alone in her bedroom. Which would be entirely scandalous if anyone discovered it, and if her reputation wasn’t already sullied by her living situation.

She turned toward him, her hands on her hips, her gaze now traveling as lazily up and down his body as his had on hers in the foyer.

He spread his arms out and turned slowly in a circle. “Do you like what you see?” he asked.

“I do. But you don’t need me to tell you how gorgeous you are. You’ve been telling yourself that for years, haven’t you?” Her lips curled into a smirk.

“I have, I will admit,” Thomas said, giving her a mocking bow. “But it is so much better when a lady such as yourself says it.”

“And what kind of lady am I?” She spoke in a challenging tone.

“The kind,” he said, “who isn’t afraid to ask for what she wants.” He gestured to himself as she smiled in response. “The kind who wants to be useful, who refuses to follow the path set out for her.” His tone softened. “The kind who rushes to offer help to someone even though most would say he didn’t need it.”

“Thank you.” She picked up a sheet of paper from her desk, which was to the left of where they stood. Her bed was on his right, while an enormous armoire was in back of her against the third wall.

Of course for both of them, their beauty was their work.

“Before we begin,” he said as the thought struck him, “do you suppose I could be useful?”

She frowned in confusion. “Useful? How?”

“That’s just what I mean. You are planning on doing something useful—I wonder if I could. Besides educate young ladies in the pursuit of pleasure,” he added slyly.

Her cheeks flushed. “If you could manage to make a living out of that I am certain you would do very well.”

But he didn’t want to do any of that with anyone but her.

Not that he could let any of his feelings for her slip—he couldn’t entangle her in his messy emotions, just because they’d decided to emerge at the worst possible time.

And he couldn’t say precisely what they were in the first place. Just that he wished they had more time together, even though having more time together would mean that his family would suffer for longer.

So he couldn’t wish for that.

He had to forget all of this, forget how
